They will enable approved microgenerators to connect using a standard UK plug and household socket. Eligible units can supply up to 800 watts of alternating current. Every product must comply with Interim Product Specification version 2 and operate safely with the local electricity network.
New standards define approved plug-in systems
The legal updates revise existing safety regulations for plugs, sockets and electricity. Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, one day after ministers approved it. The new measure creates a specific exception for qualifying generators using standard household connections. A notified body must verify that each plug complies with BS 1363 standards. The safety amendments apply to England, Wales, and Scotland, while product approval rules cover the entire UK market.
The interim standard establishes requirements for electrical design, mounting, fire safety, labelling, and consumer instructions. It also covers safe disconnection procedures and limits on electricity exported to household circuits. A technical study tested representative systems on domestic wiring under controlled conditions. The equipment operated safely during tests and showed no signs of sustained unsafe energisation. Variations in product quality, export controls, and electromagnetic compatibility were also identified, shaping the final specifications.
Public consultation influences retail product rollout
The government received 466 responses during its public consultation on plug-in solar. Over 85% of respondents supported the interim specifications. Most also favored the plug-in amendment. Participants included installers, manufacturers, network operators, technical specialists, and members of the public. Some expressed concerns about older wiring and unapproved products. Others requested clear guidance to avoid confusion between plug-in solar panels and plug-in battery systems, which are outside the new rules.
Retailers continue preparations ahead of the August launch, with major sellers engaging in discussions on compliant products. The regulations target small systems suitable for balconies, gardens, and outdoor spaces. They do not include plug-in batteries or devices that store imported electricity. Systems using the new connection method cannot operate legally before August 27. After that date, only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect through a standard household socket.
