The Central Bank of Egypt announced the preliminary figure on September 7. By the end of July, reserves were at $56.2939 billion. The monthly rise was approximately $920.6 million, or 1.6%. This total marks Egypt’s first time surpassing $57 billion in official reserve holdings.

The August figure continues a consistent upward trend seen throughout 2026. Starting the year with reserves of $52.5938 billion in January, Egypt’s holdings increased month by month. In February, reserves reached $52.7455 billion, followed by $52.8306 billion in March. April saw a rise to $53.0092 billion, and May ended with $53.1342 billion. By August, reserves had grown roughly $4.62 billion since January, and about $5.76 billion compared to December 2025’s end.
The pace of growth quickened mid-year. Reserves increased from $53.1342 billion in May to $55.0723 billion in June. They then rose to $56.2939 billion in July before reaching the all-time high in August. These three months contributed over $4 billion to the reserve total. Compared to August 2025, the latest figure is about $7.96 billion higher, representing an approximate annual growth rate of 16.2%.
Remittance inflows also contribute to foreign currency reserves
Remittances from Egyptians working abroad hit a record during the 2025/2026 fiscal year. The Central Bank of Egypt reported those inflows totaled around $47.3 billion. This is an increase of 29.6% from about $36.5 billion in the previous fiscal year. In June alone, remittances reached roughly $4.2 billion. The month’s figure was 15.6% higher than the approximately $3.6 billion recorded in June 2025.
Egypt’s latest balance of payments data cover the first nine months of fiscal year 2025/2026. During July to March, the overall balance showed a deficit of $1.8 billion. Meanwhile, the capital and financial account had net inflows of $9.9 billion. The current account recorded a deficit of $14.6 billion. These figures give the latest official view of Egypt’s external accounts before the August reserve update.
Reserve levels keep climbing month after month in 2026
The reserve figures have set successive record highs in 2026. Reserves crossed $55 billion in June and then moved above $56 billion in July. August marked the first time reserves exceeded $57 billion. Egypt now has three consecutive months ending with reserve totals above $55 billion. The August reserve level is more than 10% higher than the $51.4516 billion recorded at the end of December 2025.
These latest numbers place Egypt’s net international reserves at their highest level ever reported. They also extend a steady monthly increase since early 2026. From January to August, each month’s reserve total surpassed the previous one. The August figure remains provisional under the central bank’s reporting standards. Nonetheless, the data clearly show Egypt’s reserves rising consistently during the first eight months of the year.
